Upcoming Events & Tastings

Wine Tastings are informal and are not seated. Reserve your spot and join us during the appointed times up to 30 minutes before the event ends, and you will be able to taste through the full lineup.
Wine Classes are seated events, and are usually limited to 10 people per class. Please try to arrive a few minutes before class begins in order to get settled and allow enough time to fully explore the wines.
Cheese and/or charcuterie will be offered to pair to the wines.
Please refrain from wearing perfumes, colognes, lotions, or body oils to these events. Competing fragrances can alter your perception of how the wines smell and taste, and we want to showcase them as they’re meant to be!
Call 504-227-3888, stop by the store or, sign up online to reserve your spot!

IS MEURSAULT MISUNDERSTOOD? CLASS
Thursday, March 26th 6:00pm
$115 per person FULL – WAITLIST ONLY
For most of my years in the business, Meursault was the biggest, broadest, richest style of Burgundy. It was the go to for people used to drinking California’s big Chardonnays if they wanted to try something different but similar. We see people all the time either wanting Meursault because of that perception or wanting to avoid the village for the same reason. Lately, however, we have been tasting wines that show more acidity, akin to Puligny-Montrachet, albeit with a different overall expression. We will present wines that are all properly Meursault but might change they way you think about the appellation. We will taste some Bourgogne Blanc examples from Meursault producers as well as an array of village and single vineyard wines.

Past Events & Tastings
Chenin Blanc Tasting – Loire Valley and South Africa
Thursday, January 29th 4:30pm-6:30pm
Chenin Blanc is a chameleon-like grape because it can be a crisp, easy-drinking porch wine or a more serious rich, deep expression built for food or a colder-weather white. Chenin can make lovely sparkling wines as well and even wines of varying degrees of sweetness, including hedonistic dessert wines. We’ll ignore the sparkling and sweet wines for this tasting and focus on dry versions of varying styles.

Gevrey-Chambertin Class
Thursday, October 23rd from 6-7:30
$120 per person
Join us for a deep dive into one of our favorite villages in Burgundy, Gevrey-Chambertin. We will feature pairs of wines that are chosen to both demonstrate a producer’s style as well as the differences between the 2021 and 2022 vintages. One pair will feature two different producers from the same lieu dit (single vineyard). We will also taste wines from the same producer at village level and premier cru in both vintages. Unfortunately we will not have any Grand Cru on the table but we’ll close with an Alexandre Dumas quote about a Grand Cru and let it extend to the rest of the appellation, “Nothing makes the future look so bright as surveying it through a glass of Chambertin.”

Muscadet Tasting – $30 per person
Thursday, October 16th from 4:30-6:30
Muscadet is one of the most versatile, food-friendly wines available and it is misunderstood. When we recommend Muscadet to people who are unfamiliar with the wine, inevitably the response is, “Is it sweet?” They hear Muscat or maybe Moscato and assume it to be sweet, but Muscadet is a perfect match for oysters, all kinds of seafood as well as salads, chicken, veal, or even on its own on the porch.
Some are capable of aging and as those develop they can often be confused with white Burgundy. Join us for this exploration of Muscadet and its various styles. We will have a sparkling wine, some friendly, easy drinkers and some more serious versions, including some with age.
Rhône and Languedoc Reds Tasting
Thursday, October 2nd 4:30pm-6:30pm
$42 per person
These are wines made for grilling and for slow cooked stews and sauces, for deep flavors, in other words. We drink them year round but they shine with dishes we crave in cooler weather. Rosemary, thyme, sage, lavender and fennel grow wild there and you can smell them in the air. The mere act of breathing can make you hungry. Join us for a focused yet wonderfully diverse array of red wines.
NOT THE USUAL SUSPECTS – A White Wine Tasting
Thursday, September 25th 4:30pm-6:30pm
$35 per person
The movie Casablanca has many classic, quotable lines, including “Round up the usual suspects.” Well, we’re not being that predictable for this tasting. We will avoid the varieties people ask for all the time (‘the usual suspects’) and focus on some that are overlooked or nearly unknown. No one is going to try to force you to give up your Sauvignon Blanc or Bourgogne Blanc (perish the thought!) but this will be a great opportunity to try some wines that you otherwise might never know about. You should be pleasantly surprised. As of the writing of this newsletter we only have three of these selections on our shelves so the great majority will be new to the shop, another reason to sign up.
EXPLORING RIESLING TASTING
Thursday, September 4th 4:30pm-6:30pm
$32 per person
We love Riesling. It is a fascinating grape that can make crisp, racy wine but can also produce versions that present some sweetness (and less alcohol) for more of a session style, thirst-quenching approach. Then there are top-notch sparkling examples that can age gracefully and, of course, the classic dessert versions and just about everything in between. We believe one of the challenges about selling Riesling is a lack of understanding of the styles. Cheap, sugary versions are often what is available by the glass in a lot of restaurants and those are a deterrent rather than an invitation to try more Riesling. We will offer 10 wines from three countries covering six vintages and a wide range of styles. We won’t promise you will become a convert but you will have given the grape a fair chance if you attend. Already a fan of Riesling? Don’t miss this rare opportunity to taste these diverse and delicious selections!
White Burgundy Tour Under $40
Thursday, August 14th 4:30pm-6:30pm
$39 per person
Red Burgundy Tour Under $40
Thursday, August 21st 4:30pm-6:30pm
$38 per person
Despite our focus on (and predilection for) Burgundy, especially at good prices, we don’t always have access to enough variety to offer tastings like the ones listed below. While tariffs have been less than what was threatened there appears to be an increase on the near horizon. Couple that with a weakening dollar, a short 2024 vintage and prices will rise before the end of the year. In the meantime, the wines featured in these two tastings are all available in decent quantities, so come take a tour (or two) of Burgundy with us.

| Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Class – more info Wednesday June 4th – 6:00-7:30/7:45 $68 per person The first vintages of these wines are from 2002, but most of the vines date back decades and some are pre-phylloxera (140+ years old). Join us for a deep-dive into Etna, a region some call “The Burgundy of the Mediterranean,” with 3 whites from the 2019 vintage, and 7 reds, most from the 2018 vintage. There will also be a vintage comparison with 2018 and 2020 versions of the same wine. |
| Domaine Huet Vouvray Moelleux Class – more info Wednesday, May 28th – 6:00-7:45 $100 per person Domaine Huet is a legendary producer making wines that can age for decades. While the wines are enjoyable upon release, they are meant to age, meaning most people never get to experience the wines at their best. Thanks mostly to a library release from the domaine we have a fantastic assortment of their Moelleux wines from, inarguably, some of the best vineyards in Vouvray. |
